Hey guys, today was the first day of school! It went good but I don't really like my classes. I wanted to take "Nutrition" and "Honors U.S. History" but I just had to take Spanish and that prevents me from doing those two classes. I'm going to take Nutrition next year though, for sure! Today's cross-country workout was tough...timed-miles! My first mile was 6:40 which was were I wanted to hit, I wanted no less than 6:50. My second my mile was a little off and my left calf was bothering me, I hit 7:20. Then the third timed-mile I had to take it easy because my calf really started flaring up and I ended up running like an 8:00 or something crappy like that. Overall, tough workout and I was happy with my first two times. This morning I woke up at 5:45 and did some D.D.'s and core stability, it went really good. I like waking up early before everyone, but when I first hear that alarm I'm like "kill me now!" If anyone wants to know what drills and core work I do everyday, let me know and I'll post my little workout session. Today was a rest-day for Jump Manual, so no workout today! Probably a good idea too, because my calf was flaring up and cross-country was tough. Overall, today was pretty tiring but I'm looking forward to a good year in cross-country and finishing up Jump Manual! (even though I can't make any gains because of the counter intuitive muscle fiber training during cross-country)
quick update on my vertical:
I haven't tested it in a long time, and it's kind of getting annoying. I just don't have time between cross-country, school, and Jump Manual workouts. Maybe I'll find some time to test it this week!
Peace,
Mason

Nice first workout. What's your weekly mileage? I think a lot more stock has been placed in the "running doesn't help with your vertical" idea, but unless you're 20+ miles per week, I seriously doubt it will be counterproductive. Everyone is different.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about recovery when it's all said and done. And I don't consider 5km as a distance event. Especially the way you train for it. If you're fast, you're only running for 20 min. You run more than that in a basketball game, and that's not considered "detrimental".
I would "black box" it (that means test it out for a few weeks and see if you make gains). I know I have made significant strength gains will training for 5ks and Sprint Tris, so I don't see why you can't. Just have to eat a TON! Good luck man.
Thanks man. My weekly mileage is around 30 miles a week. I know that running 5k's isn't that much distance to make me lose vertical, it just scares me I guess because I want to make maximum results. I try to consume large amounts of calories, especially when I burn a lot in cross-country. I'm going to test my vertical today and see where it is at, i'll let you know. Thanks for reading!
DeleteI am not much of a runner myself so I am not any help on that subject. I would just think if you started getting where you feel fatigued and your legs feel tired all the time I would get some rest. I have not tested my vertical in about 2 weeks and really do not know when I will be able to especially with school starting. Anyways good luck training and I am looking forward to hearing about your vertical later on.
ReplyDeleteThanks man. My legs are completely toast, but I try to keep pushing. I had to to really modify my plyometric workout today and make it easier. I till do core work everyday and some high jump drills. Good luck on your training dude.
